What happens to Izzy is a mystery. In the book by Celeste Ng, Izzy also runs away from home, with intentions to seek out Mia and Pearl. However, unlike in the TV show, it's Izzy who sets the fire at the Richardson house — something we know from the first page of the story.

She also works at a Chinese restaurant. Pearl Warren: Mia's daughter who is a sophom*ore in high school. She does not know who her father is and throughout the novel, becomes more curious about finding out who he is and what happened when she was a child.

Mia and Pearl themselves are later shown to be leaving for Mia's childhood town, so that Pearl can meet her grandparents. Izzy has a dream while on the run that she reunites with Mia, but wakes up on a Greyhound bus, alone.

Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, and the ferocious pull of motherhood – and the danger of believing that following the rules can avert disaster.

“Find a Way,” the series finale, packed another surprise punch: We learned those little fires were set by all of the Richardson children — not just problem child Izzy, as it happened in the 2017 best-selling book.

How could she possibly be the bad guy? The problem — for both Elena and, to a degree, for Little Fires Everywhere — is that Elena is the villain of her story, and it's obvious from the start.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng is not, as I had originally anticipated, a thriller or suspense novel. Instead, it is a story of motherhood and the thin line between right and wrong. It's about how our actions as parents can unwittingly affect our children, especially as they move into young adulthood.

In the book, Mia is pointedly asexual. She's never seen an adult man naked. She's never, as Ng puts it, “felt that warmth, that electric tension.” Yet in the Hulu adaptation, Pearl tells Moody her mother has sex with “whomever she wants, whenever she wants.” Mia tells Pearl sex doesn't need to mean anything.

We eventually learn that Mia Warren's real name is Mia Wright. Mia changed her last name to Warren partly to disguise her identity, and partly to honor her late brother, Warren, who died in a car accident.

It was her siblings, Moody, Lexie and Trip, who lit the matches and watched as their rooms and, on a metaphorical level, their lives go up in flames. Their uptight, rule-following mother, Elena, in a moment of clarity in the aftermath, tells the cop that she was the one who set the house on fire.
