Bringing the World to South Carolina
Hosting the Chinese Embassy
August 2003
Last week, WAC members received a first-hand guided tour through the economic, political and social progress of The People's Republic of China by our visitors from the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., Deputy Ambassador Lan Lijun and his wife Gu Langlin, First Secretary Qian Decun, and First Secretary of Cultural Affairs Zhang Zhihong.
The Dignitaries arrived July 29th to a fast-paced schedule of meetings, parties, and functions. Mr. Qian spoke to the USC history department faculty and graduate students before meeting with families from South Carolina who have adopted children from China. The parents and children greeted Mr. Qian enthusiastically, expressing their deep gratitude for China's efficient and approachable adoption policies.
In the evening Deputy Ambassador and Mrs. Land, Mr. Qian, and Mr. Zhang were greeted by Governor Mark Sanford and other business and community leaders at a wonderful reception hosted in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Chow. It was a perfect opportunity to build personal relationships and share the nuances of both the Southern American and Chinese cultures.
Deputy Ambassador Lan was the featured speaker at the WAC Distinguished Speakers Series luncheon on the 30th following another full day of meetings with Secretary of Commerce Bob Faith, Harsco executives, and directors from the Walker Institute for International Studies. Mr. Zhang, who toured the Newberry Opera House and Carter and Holmes Orchid Farm, stated that he was very impressed that Newberry's economic revitalization has been driven in part by the town's commitment to the arts -- attracting business investors as well as residents and tourists.
As South Carolina works towards a bright future of strengthened relations with China, we hope this visit will bring a closer friendship and greater understanding between the Embassy and our citizens. Many thanks to everyone who helped make this exchange a success.
